About this course

Sewing for Fun is designed to enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in your sewing skills and in using a sewing machine, in an exciting, fun and informative way.

Students can choose to make a wide variety of projects, from small gifts and soft furnishings, curtains and blinds, to simple garments for themselves or their children. The tutor will discuss each students learning requirements at the start of the course and will advise on the best method of obtaining success with their chosen project.

Sewing and making things is following a huge resurgence at the moment. Many people are realising there are savings to be made by making your own soft furnishings, clothes, accessories and gifts, and the range of lovely fabrics available is growing, with shops selling all sorts of sewing paraphernalia now open in most towns.

The sale of sewing machines has almost doubled over the last few years, though most people owning one do not know how to use it properly.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:-

- Use their sewing machine to best advantage.
- Choose and use suitable fabrics for their chosen projects.
- Use patterns and follow written or diagrammatic instructions.
- Choose the most appropriate designs for soft furnishings.
- Take measurements and calculate fabric requirements for their projects
- Use the appropriate techniques to make their items to a high standard.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.
Your tutor will give you individual feedback and assess you as you progress through the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students will need to bring small sewing equipment, such as sharp scissors for cutting fabric, pins, needles, a tape measure, chalk fabric pencil, sewing threads to match fabrics; a retractable metal tape measure; a folder, paper and pens for notes and handouts. A digital camera is also useful.

PLEASE BRING SOME FABRIC ALONG TO THE FIRST SESSION - SUITABLE FOR MAKING A SMALL ITEM SUCH AS A CUSHION COVER OR FOR ANY OTHER PROJECT YOU WISH TO START ON.

The tutor will have a selection of items for sale, such as zipping, curtain linings and headings, piping cord, some threads, wadding and interfacings.

There are no sewing machines at the centre to use, so students need to bring their own. Students will be taught how to use it properly if they don't know how! Don't forget to bring all the accessories, foot controls and leads for the machine.

What can I do next?

Your tutor will be able to advise.
