About this course

Chair Based Exercise classes use a range of seated exercise techniques to improve fitness in the whole body. The poses are developed for those who are not able to stand or complete floor based postures but who still wish to benefit from the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise.

Every class will also include a breathing technique or meditation as well as relaxation, which all work to deepen the sense of wellbeing

We advise anyone with a pre-existing medical conditions or health concerns to seek advice from their GP before exercising, particularly if undertaking exercise for the first time.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Demonstrate and hold a variety of postures using correct alignment
• Practise control of breath to assist relaxation and stamina
• Identify the benefits of exercise throughout various life stages
• Link a number of postures to perform a flowing sequence
• Recount at least three ways in which exercises can benefit health and wellbeing throughout various life stages.

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner to find out whether this course is suitable for you.
- Do you ever have chest pain?
- Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or dizzy?
- Are you on long term medication?
- Do you have high or low blood pressure?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified yoga instructor. Our teaching methods include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an Individual Learning Plan which includes your Initial Assessment of your own fitness levels and will be used by you and your tutors to reflect on and monitor your progress. Your tutor will also use this information to ensure that all of your personal goals are achieved and provide individual support where necessary. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Your tutor will discuss your progress with you and give you feedback. You will be encouraged to record your progress on an Individual Learning Plan.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please read the following information carefully. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately. You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dresses are not suitable for this activity. Yoga is generally practiced in bare feet or socks and all movements are performed on a mat. Students need to bring a mat to work on and may wish to bring a towel.

Please bring water and avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.
