About this course

Have you been inspired to make your own clothes but don’t know where to start? This course will familiarise you with the use of a sewing machine and introduce you to commonly used techniques for sewing and altering clothes.

You will start by using a variety of essential techniques to make a small bag and then you will progress to making a simple garment from a commercial pattern. Practising a range of skills will give you the confidence to start your own sewing projects or reignite your passion for sewing. Returning students or those with some experience will continue to develop and add to their sewing skills and knowledge.

The course will cover the following topics:

- Introduction to the sewing machine
- Learn basic checks to remedy problems with the machine
- Learn basic stitches and their use
- Understanding basic fabric types
- Sewing and finishing seams

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.

What do I need to bring with me?

Your sewing machine, if you already have one, with its accessories and instructions. A notepad and pen and your own sewing kit including sharp scissors for cutting fabric, pins, needles, a tape measure, chalk fabric pencil, sewing threads to match fabrics; a tape measure. A digital camera is also useful.

For the first class please bring a piece of fabric to make a small bag – size approximately 50cms x 50cms (this could be cut from an old curtain or cotton garment) and a 20cm nylon zip (the tutor will have some supplies that you can purchase at the class). We advise that you complete the first couple of weeks before purchasing any clothing patterns or fabric.

What can I do next?

The beginners course.

What do I need to join the course

This course is suitable for absolute beginners at sewing. No prior knowledge or experience is required. There are sewing machines at the Centre for you to use, but it is best that you bring along your own machine, if you have one, to get used to using it. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity.
