About this course

This Art course is designed to improve drawing skills and provides a wide range of approaches to using watercolour and mixed media. The emphasis is on developing an individual approach from experience gained on previous courses. Themes will be suggested which will concentrate on studying from observation but some projects will involve working from imagination or developing work in an abstract direction.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Demonstrate and understand relevant techniques
Demonstrate successful use of relevant tools, equipment and resources
Use appropriate methods to collect ideas, research and experimentation
Successfully review and evaluate your own work
Research and evaluate the work of others to inform your own work and development

There is no set homework, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
Your tutor will give you feedack throughout the course and encourage you to assess your own work.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils.You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own ‘shops' where you are able to buy things at competitive prices.If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.

What do I need to join the course

There are no enrolment requirements for this course. Please speak to one of our team if you need advice as to whether this is the right course for you.
Students who have completed the Beginners course or have some experience.It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.

About the Tutor: Caroline Clough

Caroline Clough has a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art. She has exhibited and sold paintings in galleries in London and the South East and has taught painting and drawing with Kent Adult Education since 1986. She currently works mainly with watercolour, mixed media and acrylic and enjoys experimenting and working with a range of subject matter.
