About this course

This course is designed to be an introduction to screen, stencil and block printing techniques, exploring traditional methods of applying pattern onto fabric and paper. Students will investigate a range of materials and pattern-making techniques applied to a variety of textiles and make their own stencils and screens. The course will be delivered through a range of weekly tutored workshop-style sessions, including tutor demonstrations and samples at each stage. You will be looking at the work of contemporary and historical artists and craftspeople and you will keep a sketchbook or notebook to record ideas, processes and progress. The course will be informative, experimental and fun.

By the end of the course, students will:
- have a basic understanding of a variety of textile and paper printing techniques
- know the appropriate techniques to use with different fabrics and paper
- experiment with print and pattern to produce their own artwork
- be familiar with the work of contemporary and traditional textile and print artists

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need a pencil and a sketchbook. A digital camera would be useful to record progress, if you have one already. Some basic materials will be provided at cost for the first session (about £1 - £2); please pay the tutor direct, You will need to provide your own materials for the rest of the course but please do not purchase anything until you have spoken to the tutor during the first session. The tutor will also have some additional materials available; please pay the tutor direct.

What do I need to join the course

The class is suitable for beginners, from those who are completely new to the subject, to those with a little experience who want to increase their range of techniques and skills. The main focus will be on introducing a variety of techniques at beginner level. It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.

About the Tutor: Sian Lewis

Siân Lewis is a designer and textile artist. She studied fashion at the Royal College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and has10 years experience of designing and making competition dancewear including for Strictly Come Dancing. She has worked on costumes for TV, stage and film and has been teaching textiles and art since 2008. Sian is currently developing her own range of textile prints and accessories.
