About this course

This is a reading and writing course based on the Cambridge Latin Course Book 2 (4th edition, ISBN 0-521-64468 2) plus additional material supplied by the tutor, which may include classical Latin texts at an appropriate level. Students will start off by revising basic Latin sentence structure and grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc) and will learn to read passages describing Roman life and events set in Britain and Alexandria in the 1st century AD. The course is mainly about reading Latin but students will also construct Latin sentences using vocabulary and grammar covered in the course book. Students will also gain an insight into 1st century Roman culture and history.

How will I be taught?

A variety of teaching strategies will be used. Learner participation will be through individual, pair and group work. Internet resources may be used. Initial assessment is carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets are set to aid development of the skill. These are revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students will need a copy of the Cambridge Latin Course book after the first class. We advise students not to purchase other books or expensive materials until after the first class unless otherwise advised. Students should bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts.

What can I do next?

There is no qualification but this course can provide students with the basics needed for further study or to go on to study for a qualification

What do I need to join the course

For students who have no knowledge or very little knowledge of the Latin language. It is also beneficial for students who have studied in the past and need to refresh their knowledge.
