How will I be taught?

This course will include tutor input plus small group work, tutorials and practical workshops. You will receive guidance in producing a portfolio of evidence that will be submitted for assessment.

E-portfolios will be used on this course. An e-portfolio is an easy to use electronic format for students to record their work, achievement and goals. All work can be attached or uploaded very simply to the e-portfolio including handwritten work and other documents.

It gives students the opportunity to use and learn ICT skills as well as making work instantly available for assessment. We will be providing training on how to use the e-portfolio which will include how to upload a document.

Tutors will give feedback on homework assignments as well as classroom activities; there will also be tutorials. The assessment of this course includes observations of your working practice within the school following which feedback will be given.

What do I need to bring with me?

A4 folder for course notes/information, paper/notebook and pen as well as an A4 file for portfolio of evidence. Accreditation costs are included in the course fee.

Further Teaching Assistant courses or qualifications.

What do I need to join the course

It is essential that you are working in a paid or voluntary position in a primary, secondary or special educational setting for the duration of the course for a minimum of one day a week with access to children. The placement needs to be organised by the student before a place can be offered on the course.

Students need to have an enhanced DBS (previously CRB) check. Students should initially contact their placement school to discuss local DBS arrangements. Please note that this may incur an additional cost that is not included in the advertised course fee.

This is a Level 3 qualification equating to ‘A’ level standard and so assignments and, therefore, coursework will require this level of competence. You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions.

A pre-course assessment of literacy and numeracy skills is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you. This can be arranged by telephoning your local Adult Education Centre.

This Teaching Assistant course is suitable for anyone who is interested in gaining a level 3 qualification to give them skills to support teaching and learning in schools. Most students will have gained the level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate before joining the course. However, if you have suitable qualifications relating to this qualification and work experience within a school, it may be possible for you to join the course without this.

**PLEASE NOTE: Regular attendance - a minimum of 80%, a high level of commitment and approximately 5-8 hours of home study is a requirement from you, enrolling on this course.**
