About this course

This courses forms part of a series of sessions exploring mental health. Learn how mental health conditions manifest and what the symptoms look like, what might be the causes and learn some practical ways to manage some of the symptoms to help you or those around you cope better on a daily basis.

This Understanding Mental Health course in Tunbridge Wells will introduce you to some of the key concepts associated with mental health.

By the end of the day students should be able to:
1) state the range of mental health difficulties
2) recognise how mental illness is diagnosed
3) be familiar with some of the key treatments for mental illness
4) be aware of the issues surrounding mental health such as stigma

This course is educational rather than therapeutic. General broad ideas will be shared and discussed amongst the group. There could be some sharing of personal experiences this course is not a replacement for personal therapy and this element will be carefully managed by the tutor.

How will I be taught?

The Understanding Mental Health course uses learner-centred teaching in a supportive environment, aiming to help students develop their skills and increase their knowledge. We will use a range of discussion, case studies, questionnaires and audio/visual methods to explore the topic.

There are opportunities to discuss the content with the tutor, who can provide feedback and suggestions.

This is an introductory course, so you are not expected to bring any knowledge, but we will be interested to find out how much you have gained from the course by the end.

What do I need to bring with me?

Pen and paper for notes might be useful but we advise students not to purchase equipment, books or materials until after the first session of the course unless otherwise stated.
