About this course

This is a one year intensive course leading to a GCSE English Language qualification, with the examining body AQA. The syllabus covers the following and should encourage learners:

To read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This will include literature and literary non-fiction as well as writing such as reviews and journalism
To read critically and make comparison between texts
To summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts
To use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve own writing
To write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
To use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately
To acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology
To listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively

The course is assessed by two 1 hour 45 min written examinations taking place in June 2020. Further information regarding the course specification can be obtained from AQA's website at www.aqa.org.uk.

**PLEASE NOTE: this course will require regular attendance, a high level of commitment and at least 2.5 hours of home study per week, as set by the tutor.**

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught in a friendly but focused atmosphere, where your individual needs are catered for. Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that you achieve your full potential. Teaching and learning are carried out through formally taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with role play, worksheets and resource books, practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.

What do I need to bring with me?

Notebook, pens, pencils and a folder. You may also be required to purchase some texts. Your tutor will advise at the first session.

This course in GCSE English Language can enable you to progress to A Level English or higher level study with Kent Adult Education or other learning providers. What do I need to join the course

A pre-course assessment is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you and flexible support is available online and through our KAE Skills centres. At the first session of the course, the tutor will set out the commitment necessary to achieve a grade 4 or 5 which is equivalent to a C grade on the old GCSE exam.

This GCSE English Language course is suitable if you are seeking employment or career advancement, wishing to help your children with school work or just looking for a new challenge. Please note that you should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions.
