About this course

This course may be available for free if you haven’t previously achieved an A*-C Grade at GCSE Maths. For more information and to find out if you’re eligible please call 03000 41 2222.

This is a one year intensive course leading to the new GCSE Mathematics qualification, with the examining body AQA. The course follows the Linear syllabus, which comprises three broad topics:

Number and Algebra – working with Numbers and the Number System; Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Ratio and Proportion; the Language of Algebra; Expressions and Equations; Sequences, Functions and Graphs.

Geometry and Measures – Properties of Angles and Shapes; Geometrical Reasoning and Calculation; Measures and Construction; Mensuration; Vectors.

Statistics and Probability – the Handling Data Cycle; Data Collection; Data Presentation and Analysis; Data Interpretation; Probability.

The examinations will take place in May/early June 2020 and will comprise 3 written papers. Further information regarding the course specification can be obtained from AQA's website at www.aqa.org.uk.

**PLEASE NOTE: this course will require regular attendance, a high level of commitment and at least 2.5 hours of home study per week, as set by the tutor.**

How will I be taught?

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that you achieve your full potential. The course will be taught in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, where your individual needs are catered for. Teaching, learning and assessment are carried out through formally taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with worksheets and resource books, practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.

What do I need to bring with me?

Notebook, pens, pencils, folder, scientific calculator and geometry set comprising a ruler, set square, protractor and pair of compasses. You may also be required to purchase a text book.

What do I need to join the course

A pre-course assessment is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you and flexible support is available online and through our KAE Skills centres. At the first session of the course, the tutor will set out the commitment necessary to achieve a grade 4 or 5 which is equivalent to a C grade on the old GCSE exam.
This GCSE maths course is suitable if you are seeking employment or career advancement, wishing to help your children with school work or just looking for a new challenge. Please note that you should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions.
