About this course

Learn to design and produce sculpture in clay, using a variety of techniques and processes. The course will introduce the formal language of sculpture - form, mass, weight, scale, balance; and how these elements can inform your own ideas and outcomes. Working predominantly with clay, you will be taught the basic methods of 3D construction. This course is aimed at Beginners, with follow-on courses for Improvers available.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
Research and develop ideas for making sculpture.
Select and use a range of sculptural techniques and processes.
Produce sculptures that are informed by an understanding of the formal elements.
Demonstrate a broader awareness of the history and context of sculpture.
Work to health and safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and are generally able to purchase these through the centre. The cost will vary according to the scale of the work produced, but the tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project. Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should bring a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of pencils to the first class.

What can I do next?

Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Craft, Art and Design Degree courses. The ideal next step is the Improvers course.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome. No knowledge or previous experience required.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
