About this course

This Zumba® course has been designed for the active, older adult, but is open to anyone who would like to improve their fitness and health and enjoys group exercise classes.

Zumba® takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. Students will learn how to improve mobility, suppleness, stamina and how to tone up their body. This Latin inspired dance fitness class is taught by a licenced Zumba® Instructor. You will learn a series of routines to a wide range of music including Cumbia, Reggaeton, Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha and Belly Dancing Students will also be told the health benefits of attending a regular fitness class and the teaching will reflect the different fitness levels of individuals.

You will learn dance-based exercise routines to a wide range of music. Lessons include a warm up and a combination of low impact aerobic work with muscle toning exercises and stretches to improve flexibility, stamina, co-ordination and posture.

You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Perform dance-based strength and endurance exercises
- Locate muscle groups
- Practise cardiovascular moves
- Exercise independently to music with minimal guidance
- Recount at least three ways in which exercises can benefit health and wellbeing

You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. Although there is no specific work set outside of the class, students will gain most benefit if exercises are performed regularly and practised between classes

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified fitness instructor. Our teaching methods include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an Individual Learning Plan which includes your Initial Assessment of your own fitness levels and will be used by you and your tutors to reflect on and monitor your progress. Your tutor will also use this information to ensure that all of your personal goals are achieved and provide individual support where necessary. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. Your progress will be monitored through a Learning record and your own personal learning diary or fitness log.
