About this course

Mosaic is the art of creating images using small pieces of coloured glass, stone, or other materials called tessarae. The earliest known examples of mosaics were found at a temple building in Abra, Mesopotamia and are dated to the second half of 3rd millennium BC and yet they are still fashionable today.
Mosaic is a versatile and decorative craft using a wide variety of styles, materials and techniques, making it appealing to all levels of expertise. Students will be instructed in the traditional techniques of producing mosaics. We will start with the direct mosaic technique and gradually move on to other methods; initially the tutor will demonstrate basic mosaic techniques such as; planning your design on paper, choosing a colour scheme, transferring your design to a mosaic base, cutting and shaping tessarae, placing and adhering tessarae on your chosen base, grouting the design and cleaning the finished product.
