About this course

Learn to design and develop further, the idea of casting botanicals and other items. Here we will introduce you to clay and plaster moulding and have more of an emphasis on surface decoration and treatments using a wider variety of materials for finishes. You will learn different techniques and processes. Working predominantly with cement, you will be taught the methods of casting and creating a wall piece.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
Develop ideas for making further pieces
Use a range of surface treatments, techniques and processes.
Work to health and safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and are generally able to purchase these through the centre.
The cost will vary according to the scale of the work produced, but the tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project.
Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course.
All students should bring a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of pencils to the first class.

What can I do next?

Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Craft, Art and Design Degree courses.
