About this course

This course will allow you to explore the truth and the fiction surrounding this renowned Roman general and Egyptian Queen and the events leading up to their deaths. We will compare Shakespeare’s Antony with the Antony as described by his contemporaries like Cicero (and more modern biographers) and look at their roles as leaders and lovers in an attempt to assess whether or not their legendary reputation is deserved. We will also look, as Shakespeare does, at the wider political situation as the Roman Republic transitions to imperial rule, with particular attention to the role of Octavian who would become the emperor Augustus afterwards. By evaluating primary evidence as well as modern historical analysis of this period, you will be able to challenge common interpretations and possible misconceptions about these fabled events in ancient history.

At the end of this course, you should be able to:
Explain the importance of Egypt politically and commercially in the late 1st century BC
Discuss various representations of Antony and Cleopatra throughout history
Evaluate reasons for the conflict between Octavian and Antony and Cleopatra
Describe the consequences of Octavian’s victory for Rome, Egypt and the Mediterranean world
