Kent Adult Education worked in partnership with Beyond the Page to support women born outside the UK who wanted to build confidence in English and take practical steps towards greater independence - including learning to drive.
Beyond the Page supports women to develop speaking confidence in English and become active citizens. Through their work, they identified learners who wanted to drive in the UK but faced challenges accessing the driving theory test because of language barriers.

Learning English with a clear purpose
The course was designed to help learners strengthen their English, maths and communication skills while focusing on real-life content linked directly to the driving theory test. Learners developed key driving vocabulary, gained a clearer understanding of legal rules, and learned how to read and interpret road signs and instructions.
By connecting ESOL learning to a meaningful goal, the course helped learners see the practical value of improving their English. Lessons were interactive and accessible, allowing learners to practise reading, writing, listening and speaking in a supportive environment.

Building confidence and moving forward
The tutor created a welcoming and encouraging learning space where learners felt comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. This approach helped learners grow in confidence week by week, not only in their knowledge of driving theory, but also in their everyday use of English.
By the end of the course, learners reported feeling more confident and optimistic about taking the driving theory test. Many also noticed clear improvements in their spoken and written English. As a result, most learners are now progressing on to further speaking and listening ESOL classes with Kent Adult Education.
