Build Your English Skills with English Through Photography

Learning English can be about so much more than textbooks and worksheets. At Kent Adult Education, we are always looking for creative ways to help learners build their confidence, develop new skills and connect with others. One of our most exciting recent projects did exactly that.

ESOL learners at Margate Adult Education Centre recently celebrated their achievements on the innovative English Through Photography course with a special exhibition showcasing their work.

The exhibition brought together fellow students, centre staff, family members and friends to admire a collection of striking photographs, many accompanied by short pieces of writing created by the learners. The event was a proud moment for everyone involved and highlighted just how much can be achieved when language learning and creativity come together.

Learning English Through Creativity

The course was co-taught by ESOL and English tutor Gary and photographer Sinead. Designed for entry-level ESOL learners, the programme aimed to help students improve their spoken and written English while learning how to take eye-catching photographs using their smartphones.

Over eight weeks, learners explored a range of photography techniques while practising English in a supportive and engaging environment. Along the way, they strengthened their confidence in communicating ideas, sharing opinions and describing what they could see in the images.

Topics covered included:

  • Using smartphone cameras more effectively
  • Communicating emotions through colour and camera angles
  • Understanding how body language can tell a story
  • Discussing how different images make us feel
  • Developing vocabulary through creative activities

Exploring Margate Through a New Lens

As well as classroom-based sessions, learners took part in photography trips around Margate, putting their new skills into practice in real-life settings.

Highlights included a photographic treasure hunt along the Harbour Arm and a photo walk through Margate Old Town. These outings gave learners the opportunity to explore their local area, work together and capture images that reflect their unique perspectives.

The combination of practical learning, creativity and conversation helped learners develop their English naturally while building confidence in their photography skills.

A Celebration of Achievement

The final exhibition featured both printed photographs and digital displays, creating a vibrant showcase of the learners' creativity and progress. 

The work received praise from visitors and staff alike.

For many learners, the course was an opportunity to discover talents they didn't know they had. Photographer Veneta reflected on her experience, saying:

"My friends always tell me I can't take photos. After this (course) I'm not sure that's true."

Comments like these demonstrate the positive impact of learning in a creative and supportive environment. By combining language development with photography, learners gained new skills, increased their confidence and achieved something they could proudly share with others.
