Lily first discovered Kent Adult Education's Family Learning courses through her children's school, where a Community Learning venue was hosting information about the opportunities available for parents. Keen to better understand and support her own children - as well as the children she worked with in the school environment - she decided to take her first step into adult learning.
Taking the First Step Into Adult Learning
Although excited, Lily admitted she was nervous when attending her very first Family Learning course. Stepping into a classroom as an adult learner felt daunting, but with each session her confidence grew. The welcoming tutors, supportive environment and practical course content soon helped her feel at ease.
A Positive Learning Experience
Lily quickly found that the Autism Awareness course, along with the other Family Learning courses she attended, were incredibly valuable. Not only did they help her build knowledge she could use at home, but they also had a positive impact on her work within the school. She described every course as useful and relevant - giving her tools she could apply immediately in daily life.
Achievements and Career Progression
One of Lily's greatest achievements since joining the programme has been her career progression. When she began her learning journey, she was working as a lunchtime supervisor at her children's school. As her confidence and skills grew, she applied for a position as a Teaching Assistant - and was successful. This achievement is even more inspiring given her recent ADHD diagnosis and referral to the adult autism pathway. Rather than letting these challenges hold her back, Lily embraced learning as a way to understand herself better and push forward with renewed determination.
Impact Beyond the Classroom
The impact on her self-esteem has been significant. Lily says her confidence has improved hugely, both at home and work. She loves her current role as a Teaching Assistant and feels proud of what she has accomplished. Her newfound knowledge has strengthened her ability to support children's development and learning - something she is deeply passionate about.
Despite sometimes finding it difficult to focus due to her ADHD, Lily attends every session, contributes enthusiastically and engages deeply with the learning. She has achieved every learning intent across all her courses and continues to be eager for more opportunities. Her goal is to continue working in the school and keep expanding her skills through further Kent Adult Education courses.
A Truly Inspiring Journey
Lily's journey shows just how transformative Family Learning can be. From boosting confidence to supporting employment goals and empowering parents in their everyday lives, her experience highlights the real difference these courses can make.
Well done, Lily - your achievements are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of you.
