If you've been thinking about gaining a GCSE qualification in English or Maths, now could be the perfect time to take the next step. Kent Adult Education is offering Intensive GCSE English and Maths courses starting in January 2027, designed for adults who are ready to work towards a recognised qualification in a shorter timeframe.
Whether you want to improve your career prospects, progress to further education, support your children with their studies, or simply achieve a qualification you've always wanted, our intensive courses can help you reach your goal.

Fast-Track Your GCSE Qualification
Unlike a traditional GCSE programme, which is often studied over two years, our intensive GCSE courses are completed in just four months, running from January 2027 until the exams at the end of May or beginning of June.
Because of the condensed format, these courses are fast-paced and focused, giving you the opportunity to gain a GCSE qualification in a shorter period while receiving support from experienced tutors.
We use the AQA examination board, helping you prepare for nationally recognised GCSE English Language or GCSE Mathematics examinations.

Why Gain a GCSE in English or Maths?
GCSE English and Maths qualifications remain essential for many careers, apprenticeships, university courses and professional training programmes. Achieving these qualifications can help you:
- Improve your employment opportunities
- Progress into further or higher education
- Meet entry requirements for vocational qualifications
- Develop confidence in everyday literacy and numeracy skills
- Support your personal and professional development
No matter your reason for returning to learning, earning a GCSE can open doors and create new opportunities.
Initial Assessments Are Booking Now
Before enrolling on one of our intensive GCSE courses, all learners are required to complete an initial assessment.
The assessment helps us determine whether you have the existing skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete what is typically a two-year course in just four months. This is an important part of the process and ensures that learners are placed on the most appropriate course for their current ability level.
Initial Assessment appointments are available to book now, and we encourage anyone interested in joining a January 2027 course to arrange their assessment as early as possible.
Kent Adult Education GCSE Intensive courses will start in January 2027 and will run until the exams at the end of May/start of June 2027. We use the AQA examination board.
To be eligible for a place on either the Intensive Maths or English GCSE course you must be aged 19 or older on 31st August 2026, and you are required to take an initial assessment. Anyone aged 19 after this date will need to be referred to our KAE Future Pathways Team who will assess their eligibility.
The assessments are used to make sure you have the appropriate skills to be able to complete the course. This is important as you will be undertaking, what is usually a two-year course, in just four months. The courses are fast paced and intensive and require a high level of commitment including 5 hours per week to attend the online classes and at least 8 hours of home study per week, as set by the tutor.
Our GCSE courses will take place in real time, online so you will be able to interact with tutor and other class members. It is essential that you have access to a computer with a camera (which must be on during lessons) and a good internet connection to be able to participate.
Exams will take place in person at one of our centres. You will be asked your preference but we will not be able to confirm until exam entries have been submitted in the New Year. Exam Centre choices will be;
Whilst our courses are not restricted to Kent residents, due to funding regulations, Kent Adult Education cannot accept enrolments from other devolved authority areas, with the exception of those living in the Greater London Authority. Adult Education funding for devolved areas is managed by the relevant local authority, and learners should contact their local provider for available courses. Eligible learners from outside of Kent must be prepared to travel for both assessments and final exams.

Preparing for the Initial Assessment
To give yourself the best chance at assessment, it is strongly recommended that you do some preparation and revision. The following websites will give you some excellent preparation and revision tools:
BBC TEACH SKILLSWISE This site provides a good grounding in the foundation skills in Maths and English. It uses examples that may arise in daily life and shows you how you can apply your maths and English skills to them.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/skillswise
BBC BITESIZE Use the KS3 and GCSE sections of this site to familiarise yourself with the types of topics and styles of question that you may find in the GCSE exams. Once you've clicked on your subject area in GCSE (in your case, this will be either maths or English Language), you will be asked to choose the exam board for the GCSE you are sitting. We use AQA as our exam board, so please click on that option for content tailored to AQA students.

About Your Initial Assessment
Both the Maths and English assessments are handwritten papers and MUST take place in one of our centres. Each paper has an 80 minute (1 hr 20 min) time limit. If you have a diagnosed specific learning difficulty that means you need extra time, different coloured paper or to take the assessment in a room by yourself, please state that when you book your initial assessment, when asked if you have any Access or Support needs. (Please be aware we will not be able to provide any access arrangements on the day without prior warning).
Following your assessment, we will contact you via email within 14 days of submission to give you details of your result and any next steps.
If you are unsuccessful, we will refer you to our KAE Skills Team. They offer Functional Skills Maths and English classes which will help you with any missing knowledge as well as working towards a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification, which is widely recognised by employers, further education colleges and many higher education providers as an alternative qualification, broadly comparable to GCSE Grade 4/C in English or Maths.
