If English is not your first language, Kent Adult Education can help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are open for the 2026/27 academic year. Whether you're completely new to learning English or already speak English confidently and want to improve further, we have a course for you.

Courses for every level

We offer courses from basic English through to higher levels. Before you start, you will complete an initial assessment so we can help you find the right course.

Welcome to English

This course is for learners with little or no English.

You will learn:

  • Everyday vocabulary
  • Basic grammar
  • Simple conversations
  • Language for daily situations

Beginners

This course is for learners with some basic English.

You will learn:

  • Common vocabulary and grammar
  • How to read short texts
  • How to write simple sentences
  • How to complete forms
  • More confidence when speaking English

Elementary

This course is for learners who can already introduce themselves and talk about their daily life.

You will learn:

  • How to read longer texts
  • How to write short letters and emails
  • Past and future tenses
  • Social communication skills

Pre-Intermediate

This course helps learners build confidence in using English in different situations.

You will develop your ability to:

  • Speak more confidently
  • Read and understand a range of texts
  • Write more effectively
  • Communicate about past, present and future events

Intermediate

This course is for learners who already have a good understanding of English.

You will:

  • Build more advanced language skills
  • Improve spoken and written communication
  • Express yourself more clearly and confidently

Upper Intermediate

This course is for learners who want to refine their English and become more fluent.

You will focus on:

  • Advanced grammar
  • Expanding your vocabulary
  • Developing fluent conversation skills
  • Improving accuracy and confidence

ESOL For 16 18 (1)

ESOL for 16-18 Year Olds

We also offer ESOL courses for 16-18 year olds. If you are aged 16-18 and looking to improve your English skills, our dedicated KAE Future Pathways ESOL courses can help you build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing while preparing for your next steps in education, training or employment. As part of our KAE Future Pathways programme, you'll learn in a supportive environment with experienced tutors and also develop valuable study, life and employability skills. The programme includes ESOL qualifications, Functional Skills Maths, careers guidance, team-building activities and opportunities to progress to further education, apprenticeships or work.

Free courses available

ESOL courses are free for eligible learners.

To join a course, you must:

  • have lawful permission to live in the UK
  • be resident in the UK when your course starts

Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to provide evidence of your residency status before enrolling.
