Who can join this course

This course is for adults aged 19+ who are not currently in work or are in low-paid work and would like to start their journey into learning basic British Sign Language conversation.

Is this course for me

This course is designed as a basic introduction to British Sign Language for anyone interested in learning BSL basic conversations or for those who wish to use this course as a stepping stone to further learning.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Demonstrate fingerspelling your own name and at least two familiar words, to support simple signed communication
* Meet and greet another person using BSL and exchange at least three pieces of simple personal information
* Sign numbers 1–10 accurately and use them within a simple BSL exchange
* Use at least 10 simple BSL signs correctly within a short, structured conversation

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
