GCSE Maths and English Language External Exam Entry Re-sit Application Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, both GCSE Maths and GCSE English exams cost £200 per subject. This covers all exam papers per subject including the mandatory Speaking and Listening assessment (regardless if you opt out of this element) for the GCSE English re-sit, plus all administrative costs involved.

Once entries are submitted to the exam board fees are non refundable. No resources or learning materials will be provided.

We use AQA exam board.

Yes, provided you/your child are aged 16 or older on the 31st August 2025, and have previously sat a GCSE exam in the subject you wish to re-sit with the exam board AQA within the current exam specifications.

The November GCSE re-sit exams are only for those who have previously sat a GCSE exam in that subject and with the exam board used by the provider, in this case AQA. The previous exam must also have been taken within the current exam specifications.

No. We can only provide external spaces on courses we deliver and are unable to accommodate any other exams.

No, as an external candidate this is just for the exam only. External candidates must prepare independently to cover the AQA specification including the mandatory spoken assessment for GCSE English.

If you have already taken this element of the qualification and you are happy with your grade, you are able to carry this forward and just re-sit the two paper exams.

If you need or want to re-sit this element, we will arrange this for you with one of our team contacting you with a date and time. The spoken assessment will be taken online so you do not have to attend one of our centres and normally takes place prior to the paper exams.

Please be aware that if you do re-sit this element and achieve a lower grade, this will replace your previous grade.

If you require tuition you need to join one of our GCSE courses and sit your exam in May/June 2026. They can be found via our website, using the subject links below. These courses are funded by the Department for Education and are free for anyone who has not already achieved a Level 4/Grade C or above. please be aware you must be aged 19 or older on the 31st August 2025.

You/your child must be aged 16 or over after the 31st August 2025 and will be taking the exam within an adult environment.

Yes, as an external candidate you can take the exam regardless of already holding a qualification in the subject, you just need to have previously sat an AQA exam in the subject you wish to sit the exam for after 2015.

Please be aware that if you score a lower grade, this will replace your previous grade on your Unique Learner Number record that can be requested showing your academic achievements.

Whilst we try to accommodate your requests we are restricted to staffing and room constraints. Also, not all of our centres are registered exam centres but if your nearest centre is not available we will do everything possible to offer you a place as close as possible. Please also note that not all of our centres have ground floor facilities. Please disclose any requirements at application.

For 2025 November re-sits we are currently offering re-sits at our Maidstone and Canterbury centres only, but depending on demand we may be able to offer you the opportunity to sit your exam at one of the following Kent Adult Education Centres:

  • Dartford Adult Education Centre
  • Margate Adult Education Centre
  • Tonbridge Adult Education Centre

Yes, but please be aware you will need to attend each exam in person and cannot sit your exam at another location. You will need to make sure you can travel to the agreed centre so please check any travel requirements before committing.

Yes, priority is given to our learners who attended the CLS course, and sat their exam with us, during 24/25. Room capacity restrictions mean we have to cap the number of external places we can offer which may change year by year. We strongly encourage you to apply as early as possible to stand the best chance of securing a place on either exam.

We cannot guarantee that any access arrangements will be agreed by the exam board because we are unable to confirm your normal way of working. It is important you disclose any access requirements at the time of your application. Evidence must be supplied for any requests and it is possible that neither the exam board and Kent Adult Education may not be able to accommodate if provided at a later date. All requests are also subject to staffing and room constraints.

A member of the Learner Experience Team will contact you shortly to confirm if we can provide a place and complete the enrolment and take payment. Payment must be made at enrolment to secure your place as due to room restrictions places will be offered on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved.

Please make sure if you are booking on behalf of either your child or someone else to provide their name and personal information. Failure to do so can result in the wrong person being entered for the exam and the offer of a place being withdrawn.
