The Importance of BSL with Tutor Keith French

Keith French

At Kent Adult Education, we're proud to introduce one of our long-standing and passionate tutors - Keith French, a dedicated British Sign Language (BSL) educator who has been inspiring learners since 2009.

Keith brings a wealth of experience to the classroom. Since 2005, he has worked as a qualified sensory disabilities social worker with Kent County Council, supporting individuals who are Deaf or Deafblind. His mission? To ensure that everyone has access to the cultural and communication tools they need to thrive.

Why Learn BSL?

British Sign Language is more than just a way to communicate - it's a rich, visual-spatial language with its own grammar, syntax and structure. Used by around 100,000 Deaf people in the UK, BSL was recognised by the UK Government in 2003 as the fourth most used language after English, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

Keith teaches a range of BSL courses, from tasters and basic conversational skills to Level 1 and pre-Level 2. These courses are ideal for:

  • Family members of Deaf individuals
  • Professionals seeking better communication in the workplace
  • Those exploring a new career path in communication support or interpreting
  • Anyone passionate about inclusion and accessibility

Understanding the Deaf Community

Keith emphasises that the Deaf community is a vibrant cultural and linguistic minority with shared values, experiences and a strong sense of identity. Learning BSL is a step toward breaking down communication barriers and fostering dignity, respect and inclusion in everyday life - from healthcare and employment to social events and public services.

Beyond the Basics

BSL courses cover a wide range of topics including family, hobbies, travel and food. As learners progress to higher levels, they can engage in deeper conversations about science, politics, religion and more. Keith also introduces students to the complexities of Deafblind communication, including hands-on BSL for those with limited sight and hearing.

Courses That Make a Difference

BSL is not just a skill - it's a bridge to understanding. Many Deaf individuals face challenges with written English due to limited access to language during early development. By learning BSL, you can help ensure that vital information is accessible and that Deaf people are treated with the respect and equality they deserve.
