Who can join this course

Functional Skills English courses are available for UK or Irish nationals, or EEA nationals with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme and those who have lived in the UK for at least three years.
If you do not currently meet this criteria, you may still be able to attend our Functional Skills English courses if you have an eligible residency status, you will be required to provide further details regarding your status before you can be enrolled.

Acceptance on a KAE Skills Functional Skills English course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.

Before enrolling on an Functional Skills English course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an interview at your local centre.

Functional Skills English courses are FREE.

Is this course for me

The course is for students who already have good English skills and who may have completed Level 1 Functional Skills. It is not for complete beginners.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Take full part in formal and informal discussions and exchanges that include unfamiliar subjects
* Read and understand a range of straightforward texts
* Make a range of contributions to discussions in a range of contexts, including those that are unfamiliar, and make effective presentations
* Select, read, understand and compare texts and use them to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions
* Write a range of texts, including extended written documents, communicating information, ideas and opinions effectively and persuasively

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

Assessment is needed before joining this course. Please contact your local centre to complete an application.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
