Who can join this course
The UAL Awarding Body Level 2 Award in Art and Design has been developed to provide students with an interest in Art and Design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills.
This Award will provide students with an introduction to Art and Design, enabling them to both re-engage with education and acquire the requisite knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment in the creative industries.
The qualification is delivered through two linked units to provide a stimulating and supportive experience while developing a portfolio of work.
Unit 1 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in Art and Design
Unit 2 Introduction to contextual research in Art and Design

Is this course for me
Are you looking for a new creative challenge? This course is for anyone interested in developing their creative and technical jewellery and silversmithing skills and for those wishing to further their Art and Design studies. This course focuses on exploring and experimenting with materials and processes while studying for a Level 2 qualification in Art and Design through UAL, University of Arts London.
There will be 60 hours of tutor led tuition with 10 hours of supervised but not taught studio time with the expectation you will complete a further 20 hours unsupervised work towards your 2 Units.
Previous experience of jewellery making, silversmithing or creative metalwork is advisable for this course. If you have good practical skills and are interested in progressing to this course but have no experience of jewellery making or silversmithing then we suggest you enrol in one of our beginners courses first.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Select and compare, through experimental application, a range of materials and processes in support of creative activity
* Demonstrate and assess the use of materials, processes and technical skills to affect the appearance and meaning of images and objects in art and design
* Demonstrate the use of contextual knowledge to inform and develop ideas for creative activity
* Develop a portfolio of your own work for Assessment
You will be required to provide your own fabric, plus sewing thread, machine bobbin and a basic sewing kit. We advise you to complete the first week before purchasing any specialist materials. Your tutor will then direct you to what you will need, with suggestions of how to source these as the course progresses. Whilst some specialist materials, such as good quality thread, are preferable, you may wish to explore the use of recycled textiles and haberdashery to reduce costs, or as a theme.
You will create a portfolio of work and your starting point can be an A2 sketchbook to record your ideas. A folder or document wallet is also useful to keep notes, samples and handouts. You may want to bring some paper or note book to record information.
Sewing machines are provided. If you wish to use your own sewing machine in the class, please bring a copy of the manual and ensure it has been recently serviced.
