Celebrating Success: Healthy Eating, Calories and Nutrition Collaboration with Dartford Gurdwara
Date Published: 20/03/2026
View all news storiesKent Adult Education is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of a group of dedicated learners from Dartford Gurdwara, who recently completed our Healthy Eating, Calories and Nutrition course. This inspiring programme grew directly from a community need identified by the Gurdwara and was designed to support local women in developing healthier lifestyles, building confidence and strengthening essential core skills.
A Course Shaped by Community Needs
The learners began their journey by exploring fundamental nutrition knowledge. Many had never previously weighed ingredients or read nutrition labels, so the course focused on building these skills gradually and practically. They learned how to understand nutritional information, interpret Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) percentages and identify healthier alternatives to everyday cooking ingredients.
They also explored cholesterol levels, balanced diets and how small changes to traditional cooking can make a big difference to long-term health. A key highlight was learning to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), helping them understand what a healthy weight looks like for their height and lifestyle.
Building Maths Skills Through Everyday Learning
Every session involved practical maths - from ratios and percentages to cost comparisons and recipe budgeting. The group practiced weekly, both in class and at home, steadily building confidence and accuracy. These essential numeracy skills empowered the learners not only in the kitchen but in day-to-day life, with many expressing how useful they found these new abilities.
Growing Confidence, Teamwork and Independence
Beyond nutrition and maths, the course made a meaningful impact on communication, teamwork and overall confidence. For many learners, progressing to a new venue was a big step out of their comfort zone. Yet eight learners embraced the challenge and progressed to Everyday English and basic IT classes at the Dartford Adult Education Centre - an achievement they and their families are incredibly proud of.
I have found this course very good and useful. I never used to weigh before as it is something we don't do in our culture - we just throw things in, but it is important to get proportions of the nutrition right. It has been good to learn about replacements for ghee and sugar. The tutor has been so good and so kind and patient. My grandson is very proud that I have been learning about nutrition and now go into the Adult Education Centre to learn English and IT.

Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom
The Response Team also provided valuable input, supporting the group as they began making aprons for future cookery sessions. Looking ahead, the learners are excited to continue their personal development with First Aid and Food Safety training. Their enthusiasm and appreciation for the opportunities provided through Kent Adult Education shine through in every session.
A Model of Community Partnership
This collaboration has been such a success that Kent Adult Education is already in discussion with Gravesend Gurdwara to bring the same programme to their community. The achievements of the Dartford group are a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when community organisations and adult education come together with shared purpose.
