You must meet the entry requirements below:
- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

Who can join this course
Online AQA GCSE English courses are funded by the Department for Education (DFE) and are FREE to eligible learners.
To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.
Dependant on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.
GCSE English is FREE for those who don't already have GCSE English at grade C/4 or above.
Acceptance on a KAE Skills GCSE English course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.
Before enrolling on a GCSE English course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an assessment at your local centre.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding
* Read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
* Write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
* Use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately
* Acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
* Listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively
You will need a laptop or computer with good Internet connection, a working microphone and camera. You should have a dictionary and you may be advised to purchase some texts. Your tutor will advise at the start of the course.
You can progress onto A level English or higher level study with Kent Adult Education or other learning providers.

Assessment is needed before joining this course. Please contact your local centre to complete an application.
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
The course is assessed by two 1 hour 45 min written examinations taking place in May/June and a mandatory Speaking and Listening Assessment. In centre mock exams will take place in January. You will be given further information about exams in the first session of the course by your tutor.
