Who can join this course
Kent Family Learning courses and workshops are free, parents, carers and grandparents, who are aged 19 years and above and who live in Kent and are intended to help create a better family life.
We would like to be able to offer them to as many people in Kent as possible so we limit enrolment to 3 courses per academic year per person.

Non attendance on courses means that another person could have benefited from your place.
All courses are funded by the Department for Education (DFE) and are free to eligible learners.
To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.
Dependent on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.

Is this course for me
Welcome to "Cooking on a Budget" - an engaging course designed to inspire families to explore new culinary ideas and eat healthily without breaking the bank.
In this fun and practical program, families will embark on a culinary journey together, learning how to plan, prepare, and cook a variety of delicious and nutritious meals on a budget. Throughout the course, learners will discover practical tips and tricks for stretching their food budget while still enjoying tasty and wholesome meals.
From meal planning to smart shopping strategies, families will learn how to make the most of their resources without sacrificing flavour or nutrition. In each session, families will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get hands-on in the kitchen, preparing and cooking a range of budget-friendly dishes. At the end of each session, everyone will come together to taste their creations, with a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment in cooking together as a family.
"Cooking on a Budget" is not just about food - it's also an opportunity to build confidence in cooking skills and brush up on practical maths and English skills in a fun and interactive way.
Suitable for families with children aged 3 - 11, this course provides a valuable learning experience for the whole family.
Join us on a journey of culinary discovery and budget-friendly cooking adventures with "Cooking on a Budget". Together, let's create delicious meals, nourish our bodies, and build lasting memories in the kitchen.
Course aims
This course will offer:
* Use the ‘Eatwell Plate’ to learn about food groups and work towards a balanced diet
* Follow and adapt child friendly recipes - reading, writing and ratios
* Use metric and imperial measures and conversion tables when shopping and preparing food alone and with your child
* Increase safety awareness inside & outside the home with food preparation, storage & cooking
* Compile ideas for healthy breakfasts, lunches & snacks
* Create a 5 a day meal planner and shopping list to suit budget and family lifestyles
* Read and understand food labels/tables in relation to Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs) for men, women and children
* Try new foods and discuss likes/dislikes
Since this course can run over different time frames, the aims will be amended to fit in with the time allocation and the learner requirements.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
