Who can join this course

This hands-on course introduces students to the fundamentals of garment construction with a focus on both fashion and costume design. Through practical sewing sessions, pattern work, and design exploration, students will gain the skills to create simple garments and understand the basics of fashion and costume production.

Is this course for me

Beginners with little or no prior sewing experience
Aspiring fashion designers or costume makers

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Explain the health and safety considerations for the tools and resources you have used
* Sew a hem sample appropriate to fabric type and style of chosen garment
* Select and demonstrate the use of an interlining appropriate to fabric type and garment style
* Demonstrate a fastening method suitable for your chosen garment
* Sew a sample styling technique appropriate to your chosen garment. Examples: collar, cuff, pocket, waistband

You do not need to bring any special equipment to the first class.

For subsequent classes you will be asked to bring a basic sewing kit. You will need to provide your own fabric and thread to make a simple project. We advise you complete the first week before purchasing any patterns or fabric.

A folder or document wallet is useful to keep handouts. You may want to bring some paper to take notes during demonstrations.

Sewing machines are provided.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
