Who can join this course

Independent Living Skills (ILS) courses are funded by the Department for Education (DFE).

To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.
Dependant on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.

Acceptance on a KAE Skills ILS course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.

Before enrolling on an ILS course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an interview at your local centre.

We make every effort to keep our prices as low as possible and therefore regret that we cannot return payments to students who withdraw from a course. When you enrol, please understand that you are agreeing to pay the total price for the whole course, including all outstanding balances should you withdraw.

You may be eligible for a discount of your course fees; this will be dependent on your individual earnings and employment status. This will be discussed with you at your interview.

Is this course for me

Our Independent Living Skills courses are designed to cover everyday skills and knowledge for those who have a mild to moderate learning disability and/or difficulty. They are also suitable for adults with mental health difficulties or those who feel they need extra support to learn.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Increased confidence
* Improved skills for progressing to further learning
* Improved skills and knowledge around health and wellbeing
* Improved skills to participate in community life
* Improved skills for Independent Living

This course can enable you to progress to examination aims if appropriate or other study with Kent Adult Education. There may be courses in English, maths and IT available. Talk to your tutor when the course is coming to an end.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

Assessment is needed before joining this course. Please contact your local centre to complete an application.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
