Who can join this course
No previous experience is required. For anyone who is interested in learning British Sign Language and how to communicate with Deaf people.

Is this course for me
This course is designed as a basic introduction to British Sign Language for both those who have an interest in learning just a little or for those who wish to use this course as a stepping stone to learning more of the language/before joining an exam course.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Fingerspell names etc and use fingerspelling to support signing
* Meet and greet others and exchange simple personal information
* Sign numbers up to 10
* Use up to 10 simple signs within a simple conversation using BSL
* Hold a basic signed conversation about weather, food and drink and/or family
This course is scheduled to not be running on the following dates:
- Tuesday, 26 May 2026
From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
