Who can join this course
Kent Family Learning courses and workshops are free, parents, carers and grandparents, who are aged 19 years and above and who live in Kent and are intended to help create a better family life.
We would like to be able to offer them to as many people in Kent as possible so we limit enrolment to 3 courses per academic year per person.
However, if you have a reason why you should be permitted to do additional courses, and are able to commit time for your attendance, please contact Business Support on 03000 415888 or email businesssupportteam@kent.gov.uk
Non attendance on courses means that another person could have benefited from your place.
All courses are funded by the Department for Education (DFE) and are free to eligible learners.
To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.
Dependent on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.

A transformative course designed to illuminate the profound impact of communication on your child's development.
In this immersive journey, you'll uncover the importance of early communication with your baby, toddler, or young child. Through engaging discussions and expert insights, you'll gain a deeper understanding of language development milestones and how they shape your child's cognitive growth. Explore practical strategies for fostering your child's speech and language skills in everyday scenarios. From narrating daily activities to playing interactive games, you'll unearth creative ways to spark conversation and language. Join us in creating moments of connection and laughter with fun-filled activities designed to enhance communication skills.
Tailored for children aged 2 to 5 years, this course will empower parents seeking to nurture their child's language potential. We'll keep it simple and fun, so everyone can join in. Together, let's embark on a journey where every word becomes a stepping stone toward unlocking your child's bright future.
Course aims
This course will offer:
* How children and babies communicate and learn to talk from 0-5 years
* A consideration of what language and communication are, and why they matter
* A study of the importance of talking, listening to and playing with babies and children
* An opportunity to play games, tell stories, read books, sing rhymes and songs and make things to support the development of children’s language, communication and English skills
* Discussions of ideas to support children’s language, communication and English skills in everyday routines and when out and about
* An insight into how children begin to learn to read and write
* An opportunity to develop adults’ own communication skills
* Independent, paired, small group and whole group work: an opportunity to make new friends, build confidence and self-esteem
* Opportunities to explore new ideas and develop problem solving strategies
Since this course can run over different time frames, the aims will be amended to fit in with the time allocation and the learner requirements.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitment booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
