You must meet the entry requirements below:
- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

Who can join this course
This course is designed for beginners who want to explore creative writing as a means to relieve stress and embark on the journey of writing their first novel. Through a combination of lectures, writing exercises, peer reviews, and personal feedback, students will develop their writing skills, find their unique voice, and create a solid foundation for their novel.

Whether you've always dreamed of writing a novel but didn't know where to start, or you're seeking a creative outlet to balance your daily routine, this course offers a supportive and structured environment to help you achieve your goals. No prior writing experience is necessary—just bring your imagination and a willingness to learn!
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Understand the fundamentals of creative writing, including narrative structure, character development, and dialogue
* Develop a consistent writing habit and use writing as a tool for stress relief
* Create detailed character profiles and settings for their novel
* Give and receive constructive feedback on writing
* Revise and edit their work based on feedback and complete a first draft of their novel
You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.
Please bring a notepad and pen/pencil to your first lesson.
Unless otherwise stated, you will be advised in your first class what resources you will need. If you do have equipment appropriate to the subject, please bring them.
Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses relevant to their subject.
You can attend further Beginners courses which will cover additional skills at Beginners’ level and use those you have already learned in different ways to help perfect them or progress to Improvers courses.
This course is scheduled to not be running on the following dates:

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
For Health & Safety, please do not wear open toed shoes.
It is important to note that art and craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. Also, please make your tutor aware of any pre-existing health conditions that may impact on your learning.
