You must meet the entry requirements below:
- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

Is this course for me
Foundations of Creative Writing:
Begin your writing journey with confidence. This introductory course is designed for adults who want to explore creative writing for personal growth or future career opportunities. You will learn the fundamentals of storytelling, character development, and narrative structure, while experimenting with fiction, memoir, and journalistic writing.
Through guided exercises and supportive feedback, you’ll build a strong foundation and start shaping your unique voice. This course is aimed at those who have completed several Beginners or Improver courses in this subject, or have previous experience of working in this subject and have an interest in progressing their chosen subject in a vocational direction.
Those with no experience of this subject should consider our range of Beginners courses.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Understand the basic elements of creative writing, including character, setting, plot, and point of view
* Experiment with voice, tone, and style to begin developing a personal writing identity
* Learn how to give and receive constructive feedback in a supportive environment
Please bring a notepad and pen/pencil to your first lesson. If you do have equipment appropriate to the subject, please bring it.
Your tutor will advise you on follow-on courses.
You can attend further vocational courses which will cover additional skills and use those you have already learned in different ways to help perfect them or progress to accredited qualification courses, where offered.
This course is scheduled to not be running on the following dates:
- Friday, 24 October 2025
From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
For Health & Safety, please do not wear open toed shoes.
It is important to note that art and craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. Also, please make your tutor aware of any pre-existing health conditions that may impact on your learning.
If you need to bring a carer with you, or another adult please speak to the Curriculum Leader for the course.
