Who can join this course

This hands-on course introduces students to the fundamentals of garment construction with a focus on both fashion and costume design. Through practical sewing sessions, pattern work, and design exploration, students will gain the skills to create simple garments and understand the basics of fashion and costume production.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Identify and safely use basic sewing tools and equipment
* Operate a sewing machine and perform essential stitches
* Take accurate body measurements and prepare fabric for cutting
* Explain the health and safety considerations for the tools and resources you have used

What will I need for my course

You do not need to bring any special equipment to the first class.

For subsequent classes you will be asked to bring a basic sewing kit. You will need to provide your own fabric and thread to make a simple project. We advise you complete the first week before purchasing any patterns or fabric.

A folder or document wallet is useful to keep handouts. You may want to bring some paper to take notes during demonstrations.

Sewing machines are provided.

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
