Who can join this course

This course is designed for learners who have some basic experience with lipreading—whether you've completed an introductory course or have been practicing independently—and are ready to take your skills further. It’s ideal for adults with hearing loss who want to improve their confidence in everyday conversations, as well as those looking to refine their understanding of speech patterns, non-verbal cues, and group communication.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Reinforce your understanding of basic speech patterns and sentence structures
* Recognise and interpret lip movements in varied contexts
* Integrate non-verbal communication techniques
* Develop strategies for group conversations and quiet settings
* Build confidence in handling miscommunication

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.

What will I need for my course

A folder for your notes, notebook/paper, pen/pencil, glasses if worn, hearing aid if worn plus spare batteries.

What can I do next

After completing this course, you will be well-prepared to take your lipreading skills further. We recommend progressing to an Improvers course, where you will explore more advanced speech patterns, practice lipreading in challenging environments, and refine your group communication strategies.
These next steps will help you build greater independence, improve your confidence in social and professional settings, and continue developing practical tools for everyday communication.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
