Who can join this course

Our English courses are funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and are FREE to eligible learners.
To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.

Dependent on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.

Acceptance on a KAE Skills English course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.

Before enrolling on an English course you will need to create a learner account online, complete your residency eligibility check and then book an initial assessment to determine the best level. This course is for KAE learners who have successfully enrolled on GCSE English language starting in September 26. Learners who want to do GCSE English with us should attend this short, online, taster course on Saturday 5/09/26 in order to prepare for the longer qualification. The tutor will cover some key dates and induction information as well as some practical work and preparation for the GCSE content.

Is this course for me

The course is for students who already have good English/maths skills and who may have completed Entry Level 3 Functional Skills.
It is not for complete beginners.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

Please bring a pen, notebook and an A4 folder to each lesson.
If you are studying online, you will need secure internet connection, a laptop, tablet or PC. We do not recommend using a phone to attend online due to limited functionality.

You can progress to the next level in maths/English and prepare for a Functional Skills qualification or GCSE with Kent Adult Education. There is a wide range of other courses available with Kent Adult Education or other providers to support further study or employment.
Talk to your tutor about next steps. The National Careers Service may attend your course to advise about further study or employment opportunities.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

Assessment is needed before joining this course. Please contact your local centre to complete an application.

As part of your funding agreement, you must attend at least 85% of your lessons, complete any required self study and all necessary qualifications you are enrolled on. You may be withdrawn if you do not attend regularly. If you have a pre arranged commitment booked during term time, please contact your tutor to catch up on any missed work.
