- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

This course is aimed at those who are new to the skills and knowledge required of bookkeepers. It is suitable for students studying in preparation for employment in bookkeeping roles and for those who are already employed in bookkeeping and/or data processing roles.

This course is perfect for you if you:

- Want to gain a solid introduction to manual bookkeeping principles
- Are considering a career in finance or business support
- Run or support a small business and want to manage financial records more confidently

You’ll gain a fundamental understanding of single-entry bookkeeping and build the confidence to progress to further study or apply your skills in a practical setting.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Recognise the role and responsibilities of a bookkeeper within a business context
* Identify and interpret basic financial transactions and terminology
* Process customer and supplier transactions accurately
* Record receipts and payments using appropriate bookkeeping methods
* Identify the benefits and risks of using accounting software for bookkeeping tasks

As part of the enrolment process for this course, and before your place can be confirmed, please complete the Bookkeeping Initial Assessment. Be sure to answer all questions and provide as much relevant information as possible in each section.
Bookkeeping Initial AssessmentYou will need basic computing skills to attend this course as it is online and the final exam is computer-based. You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/activities and take part in group discussions.
The skills developed in this qualification may also underpin those developed further in the following Level 2 qualifications:
• Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping
• Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

Students interested in the AAT courses will be required to complete an initial assessment prior to enrolling on the course, to ensure that this is the most suitable course for you.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
**PLEASE NOTE: In order to complete the course and gain a certificate, you will need to pass one computer-based exam. This assessment will take place in Oakwood House in Maidstone on 23rd March but please ensure you are available in the last week of March which will have the planned alternative exam date in case of unavoidable course alterations.**
**PLEASE NOTE: You must register with AAT in order to take the exam and gain the certificate. You will need to complete registration by the third week of the course. You will need to pay a qualification fee (£46) directly to AAT in order to register for the exam. The fee covers this qualification's lifetime. Registration provides you with access to online learning materials which will support you with your study.**
**PLEASE NOTE: As this is an accredited course, regular attendance, a high level of commitment and approximately 2.5 hours of home study per week are required from you when enrolling on this course. You may be removed from the course if you do not regularly attend.
