Who can join this course

Functional Skills English courses are funded by the Department for Education (DFE) and are FREE to eligible learners.

To be eligible to enrol and attend our courses you must have lawful permission to reside in the UK and be ordinarily resident in the UK at the course start date.
Dependant on your individual circumstances, you may be required to show evidence of your residency status before you can enrol and attend courses with us.

Acceptance on a KAE Skills Functional Skills English course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.

Before enrolling on an Functional Skills English course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an interview at your local centre.

Is this course for me

The course is for students who already have good English skills and who may have completed Entry Level 1 Functional Skills. It is not for complete beginners. This course is also suitable for learners who have completed their Entry Level 2 FS.

Please note that your course may relocate to a different venue part way through its duration, and we will keep you informed of any changes in advance.

This course is scheduled to not be running on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, 18 February 2026
  • Wednesday, 08 April 2026
  • Wednesday, 15 April 2026
  • Wednesday, 27 May 2026

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

Assessment is needed before joining this course. Please contact your local centre to complete an application.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
