- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Apply counselling skills in a manner that upholds ethical standards and ensures safety for all parties involved
* Clearly define and uphold the boundaries of the helping role to foster a professional and supportive environment
* Demonstrate empathy in interactions, providing compassionate and understanding support to those seeking help
* Prioritise the needs and concerns of the helpee, ensuring their issues are at the forefront of the helping process
* Leverage self-awareness to enhance the effectiveness of helping interactions and personal growth
* Employ a variety of counselling techniques to facilitate meaningful and productive helping interactions
* Use feedback and self-reflection to continuously improve and refine counselling skills
To succeed in this course, you will need the ability to engage with and cope with the course content, as well as a willingness to explore and articulate your own intra-personal experiences. A strong motivation to develop as a helper, emotional stability, and an openness to self-development are essential. You should also be able to identify reasons for undertaking the training that go beyond personal growth. An awareness and appreciation of difference and diversity is important, and some centres may require references as part of the application process.
After completing the Level 2 Certificate, you can progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (CST-L3) or
CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Applied Counselling Studies (CAST-L3). These courses delve deeper into counselling theories, ethics, and practices, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the counselling process.
