Who can join this course

For adults of all ages who have an acquired hearing loss needing communication support, ie. people who have developed hearing loss after they have learned to speak. No previous experience of lipreading is required and those who have been learning in previous years are also welcome. Contact Hi Kent direct to enrol. Is this course for me

This course is run in partnership with Hi Kent. This online Lipreading course is for anybody who has an acquired hearing loss and wants to learn to communicate better in general conversation with family, friends and colleagues

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Recognise visible consonant lip shapes, long vowels and double vowels and cope with non-visible sounds
* Use body language and facial expressions to assist lipreading
* Use fingerspelling to aid lipreading
* Recognise good conditions and helpful tactics for lipreading - seating, lighting etc
* Acquire and access information about assistive equipment available for home/office and about agencies which are helpful to people with a hearing loss

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.

A folder for your notes, notebook/paper, pen/pencil, glasses if worn, hearing aid if worn plus spare batteries.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
