Who can join this course

This course is ideal for adults who are new to lipreading or have limited experience, individuals with hearing loss looking to improve their communication skills. It’s also suitable for family members or caregivers who want to better understand lipreading techniques.

Join this course at any time subject to availability.

Students will also benefit from sharing experiences with others who have a hearing loss. They will find lipreading classes are positive, motivating and enjoyable. They will benefit from increased observation skills, increased confidence and reduced stress.

If you struggle to follow conversations in quiet or group settings, want to feel more confident in everyday interactions, are looking for practical strategies to handle miscommunication, or prefer a supportive, beginner-friendly environment, then this course is definitely for you.

No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and participate.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Understand the basics of lipreading, including its importance and core techniques
* Recognize simple speech patterns and lip movements to identify common sounds and words
* Build a working vocabulary of everyday words and phrases through guided practice
* Use facial expressions and contextual clues to enhance your understanding of spoken language
* Gain confidence in real-life conversations through role-playing and supportive feedback

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.

What will I need for my course

A folder for your notes, notebook/paper, pen/pencil, glasses if worn, hearing aid if worn plus spare batteries.

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
