Who can join this course

This beginner’s embroidery course is designed to accommodate absolute beginners.
It is perfect for those learners who want to be inspired or get creative and learn a new skill.
No embroidery skills or experience is needed, however basic hand stitch skills would be an advantage.

This is one of our Tailored learning Entry level (Beginners) First Steps courses. This course is for learners who have not studied embroidery or creative hand stitch with us before.

Is this course for me

The course focus is to build confidence, in sewing and using a needle and thread. You’ll be taught basic stitch techniques, that you’ll use to create a beautiful project for you or someone you love.

The project-based piece of work will allow you to explore di?erent embroidery skills and teach you beautiful hand work stitches both outline and filling stitches ie chain and daisy stitch.

At the end of the course, you will be able to demonstrate:
10 embroidery stitches plus, how to generate a personal design to embroider
Select suitable materials and plan an embroidery and complete a small hand embroidery project.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Generate a personal design to embroider
* Demonstrate two outline stitches
* Demonstrate two infill stitches
* Explain how to plan a small hand embroidery project, including appropriate choice of materials

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.

What will I need for my course

For this online course you will need:

A basic sewing kit to include embroidery needles, a threader, pins, embroidery scissors,
3 x DMC or Anchor embroidery thread
A 7-inch embroidery hoop
2 x piece of calico 10” square, or other similar plain cotton fabric
A pencil

It is advised you bring a notepad and a writing utensil to make notes.

Additional Information

From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.

To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
