Who can join this course

This course is aimed at those new to Embroidery. No previous experience is needed.
This course is also ideal for anyone interested in embroidery and its history as an art form, and for anyone who has done some embroidery in the past.

Hand stitching is a highly versatile and expressive medium that offers links to other artistic and commercial crative practices. If you would like to explore your creativity or develop your craft skills in a different medium, this is the course for you.

Those who have already completed Beginners courses should consider our range of Level 1 (Improvers) courses.

Discover a traditional English embroidery technique and create a unique piece using historical patterns

This series of workshops will explore the traditional English embroidery technique known as blackwork, historically used to decorate garments, primarily with geometric designs
Despite what the name suggests, black isn't the only colour used, as there are examples of blackwork embroidery throughout history done in blue, green, and metallic colours.
In this course, you learn about the historical context of this art form and will be guided through the process of bringing blackwork embroidery into the 21st century by creating your own sampler of both classic and contemporary patterns and going on to produce your own modernised blackwork bumble bee.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Transfer a design onto fabric
* Demonstrate 3 traditional blackwork stitches
* Stitch your own bee design inspired by blackwork embroidery
* Explain the health and safety considerations for the tools and resources you have used

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.
