You must meet the entry requirements below:
- You must be ordinary resident in the UK at the start date of the course - Ordinary resident means you live in the UK and have chosen to live here for a settled purpose
- You must be a British citizen
- You must be aged 19 or over as at the 31st August 2025 for courses in the 2025/26 academic year
- You must agree to commit to and complete an Individual Learning Plan in agreement with your course tutor

Who can join this course
This is one of our Tailored learning Level 1 Intermediate courses. This course is for learners who have not studied with us previously in Languages at Level 2 or above. It is also for learners who have completed their total of 120 guided learning hours at Entry level (First Steps / Further Steps) in Languages and wish to progress to the next level.
Eligible learners may enrol onto Language courses at Level 1 up to a maximum of 120 guided learning hours in total.
If you have already reached the maximum guided learning hours in level 1 Languages, please speak to your tutor or another member of our team about your next progression steps.
This course follows on from our Beginners Plus. Students need to either have completed one of our Beginners Plus courses or have studied GCSE (D/E grades) or have studied the language for approximately 100 hours and who can express themselves and understand simple information relating to personal, work or social matters.
If you are unsure of your level, please carry out our self-assessment test available on www.kentadulteducation.co.uk. The assessment provides a score to help you choose the best course for you. If you are still unsure, speak to a member of staff in a centre or to an Area Education Manager.

Is this course for me
This course is for anyone who is looking to improve the practical speaking and listening skills needed to cope with a range of real life situations in the workplace, more complex than those at Beginners Plus level.
Grammar will be expanded throughout the course.
Course aims
By the end of the course you should be able to:
* Describe (people, places, situations, events etc) and make comparisons
* Make simple arrangements
* Express an opinion
* Deal with emergencies, problems and complaints
* Listen and respond to information from a range of sources (telephone messages, news headlines/public announcements, instructions, conversations)
* Grasp general meaning of written material (e-mails, mobile text messages, letters, notices, leaflets etc)
* Exchange/extract key information on a variety of topics/situations
You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.
The course book will be discussed during the first lesson if appropriate.
From 1st August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) require that learners attending this course must identify their primary purpose for learning. This course is not available for learners whose main aim is to learn a hobby, or for leisure/pleasure.
To get the most out of your course we recommend you attend at least 85% of your sessions. If you do have a pre-arranged commitments booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcome.
