Who can join this course

This is one of our Tailored learning Level 1 (Improvers) courses. This course is for learners who have not studied with us previously in the same subject area at Level 2 or above. It is also for learners who have completed their total of 120 guided learning hours at Entry level (Beginners) and wish to progress to the next level in the same subject area.
Eligible learners may enrol onto Level 1 courses in this subject area up to a maximum of 120 guided learning hours in total.
If you have already reached the maximum guided learning hours in this subject area and level, please speak to your tutor or another member of our team about your next progression steps.

This course is aimed at those who have completed a number of Beginners Photography courses or have previous experience of Photography courses. Those with no experience of Photography should consider our range of Entry level (Beginners) courses. This course would suit anyone with a basic knowledge of using a digital camera (not a complete beginner). It would be beneficial if students had attended a beginner photography course already.

Our Creative Intent
Creativity is an essential aspect of human expression and plays a crucial role in fostering well-being and a sense of purpose.
The ambition of the Kent Adult Education Creative curriculum is to engage the community through an energetic and diverse programme offer planned to meet the varied needs and interests of Kent’s communities, thereby ensuring high quality learning is delivered across the county in dedicated adult education centres, online and in neighbourhood settings.
Creative courses aim to build confidence through learning, allowing students to express themselves, think critically, and collaborate with their peers. By empowering our students to become confident, imaginative, and adaptable learners, we aim to develop students' curiosity, resilience, and adaptability, preparing them for future challenges, opportunities, and personal development.

Building on what you have learnt on our Beginners courses, you will be encouraged and supported in further developing your Photography skills.
The course picks up on the fundamentals of technical photography, specifically focussing on Metering Techniques, Composition, Semiology and Meaning. It also introduces project work and will give you the opportunity to work on projects.
You will be introduced to three key areas of photography: Style, Subject and Meaning. These three areas encompass much of what we do in photography, and you will be encouraged to engage with them in meaningful ways. Parts of this course are self-directed and so there is freedom to make the kind of work that you would like to produce. Photography, the recording of light. Getting to grips with how light affects our photography will vastly improve how we create images. This course is designed to help you build your portfolio, photographing a range of subjects in the studio and surrounding area. This course will major on lighting: looking at using natural light to create portraits; using the camera's in-built pop-up flash effectively; introducing reflectors to maximise the use of available light; an introduction to using flash lighting equipment; and how to combine natural and artificial lighting. We will be reviewing images directly through a laptop and PCs, so some image adjustment skills will also be covered in this course.

We will use a practical, hands-on approach with tutor input and one to one guidance. You will be involved in shooting and appraising your work and will collect a folio of images. The tutor will give one to one guidance and feedback.

Course aims

By the end of the course you should be able to:

* Recognise the difference between natural and artificial light in relation to photography
* Identify different lighting equipment used in photography
* Demonstrate appropriate camera settings for using pop-up flash effectively
* Capture a range of subjects in the studio environment to build a diverse portfolilo of images using artificial light

You will also be asked to think of Personal Aims to individualise your learning experience, as well as another benefits the course may have.
