This class is suitable for all levels: for those with existing experience and beginners who are keen to explore the interesting effects of this versatile medium.
In the first 6 weeks we will look at techniques and approaches such as broad brush, impasto, acrylic mediums and glazing etc. You will then use these techniques, with the tutor’s guidance, to develop individual pieces of work in the remaining 2 weeks of the course. The aim is to work in a looser or expressive style, creating interesting textures and forms, and exploiting colour and tone. There will be a range of subjects including portraits, still-life landscapes and option to explore abstraction.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• Use a variety of watercolour techniques
• Create a variety of pieces of work using these techniques
• Develop your work further using these techniques
• Successfully review and evaluate your own work
• Research and evaluate the work of a variety of artists to inform your own work and development in project -based tasks.
There is no set ‘homework’, but you will get the most out of this course if you are able to do further work and preparation at home.
There is no qualification for this course.
There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Sarah McNulty
Sarah McNulty is a practising artist and a trained tutor, who has run classes for adults for several years. She has studied to M.A. level and exhibited paintings in London and Tokyo, where she was awarded a scholarship. Sarah has a wide experience of painting: using oils, acrylics and other water based paints on canvas and paper.
Drawing is also an important part of her creative process for recording observations and developing ideas for larger work. Sarah is inspired by colour and light in natural and man-made forms. She encourages students to learn, practise and experiment with methods whilst developing their own images, through sketchbook work, to feed into painting and drawing projects.
Her work was selected by the Royal Watercolour Society for an exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London in 2019.
