Dear Learner

Family Learning courses are engagement courses, helping families move back into learning.

This course is funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and FREE to eligible learners*. Priority for places is given to new learners.

*To be eligible you must be able to answer ’yes’ to BOTH questions below:

1. Have been living in the UK or an EEA country continuously for at least 3 years prior to their learning start date?
And
2. Are you one of the following: A UK national OR An Irish national OR and EEA national with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme?

If you are unable to answer yes to both questions, you may still be eligible. Please speak to a member of our team.

Learners can attend up to TWO Family Learning courses per academic year. Funding allows for one Parenting OR craft course AND one Family English, maths or Language course.

Please do not enrol unless you are confident that you will attend, as any no shows could have benefitted another family.

************

This online course is for mothers, fathers and carers with children aged 5 to 11 years. This is an Adult only course.

It is designed to: understand and look at various principles of Autism and the different aspects that can be present.

It is a discussion-based course designed to give parents a better understanding of the spectrum. It also offers practical advice to better support children with communication, behaviour management and coping strategies.

Parenting courses are not interventions, and the tutor will not tell parents “how it’s done”, rather they are discussion-based with time to share experiences, ideas, concerns and possible solutions.

How will I be taught?

This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners. Learners will join the class from home and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as they would in the classroom (speaking and listening).
Learners will be required to turn on their camera throughout the session for safeguarding compliance.

There will be discussion and demonstration. You will have opportunities to discuss and ask questions - this is an interactive course with the Tutor present throughout.

Content will include all/some of the following: Tutors will facilitate and encourage discussion in a secure environment, the expectations and concerns of the learners. Learners will:
• Discuss the basic principles of autism and the different aspects that can be present
• Discuss different expert theories to gain a deeper understanding of the spectrum
• Discuss the diagnosis process: what this involves and how to go about it
• Discuss techniques to create a supportive environment, behaviour management and coping strategies
• Discuss ways to support children to communicate and manage stress and anxiety.
