For the students who would like to learn the art of beautiful writing. This course is a great start to the world of calligraphy- perfect for beginners and those with some experience. Introduction will be given in a major calligraphy hand. The students will gradually explore various historical scripts and variations. It will introduce simple manuscript decoration, layout, colouring and the students will create their own project to their individual levels. The students will learn calligraphy step by step in a calm atmosphere. A flexible approach to teaching working on a one to one basis with students whenever possible.


By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Set up a working area efficiently.
- Use calligraphy tools and materials correctly.
- Study and write a historical script.
- Rule up guidelines correctly and make a simple layout.
- Some students, create your own project(s) or participate in group work
- Working to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

There is no set of homework, but you are welcome to practice and do further work at home.






Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Naoko Munro

Naoko is a native Japanese speaker. She has been teaching Japanese in a Japanese school for three years in England and helping teach Japanese to adults and young people for over five years. She has experience as a private tutor teaching other subjects in Japan. She has also been working as a Japanese- English translator

She creates an environment where the students are encouraged to speak Japanese and she believes that learning Japanese should be fun and enjoyable.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills. Your tutor will monitor your progress against the outcomes of the course using an Individual Learning Plan. You will get to add your own goals to this document so that you can see what progress is being made. Your tutor will offer you support and guidance on how you can achieve your goals and improve your skills and technique.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please do not buy anything before the course starts to avoid unnecessary expense. At the first session, the tutor will introduce other tools and materials e.g. pens, ink, paper, etc.


For the Beginners
A wide calligraphy felt tip pen. (If you buy a new one, Edding or ZIG 3.5 mm - 5mm is recommended.)
