This Level 2 course is the first step on the professional route to qualify as a counsellor. This course will be taught online.

This is an excellent starting point for those who are looking for a change of career to take them into one of the helping professions. It is particularly relevant for those in education, health, social services, a voluntary organisation, personnel or management. In addition, counselling skills have proven to be effective in many other work roles and this course is ideal for anyone who wants to extend their people skills.

This Level 2 course will cover:
• The importance of the counselling process of maintaining appropriate moral and ethical standards according to The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy-
(BACP) Ethical Framework
• The counselling setting
• Improving observation
• Listening skills including blocks to listening
• Responding skills
• Deeper level counselling skills and processes
• The importance of therapeutic alliance to the helping process
• Awareness, acceptance and understanding of the self and others

Students will also be considering self-awareness;
• Who am I?
• How do I respond to others?
• How do others respond to me, in my work helping others?
• What more do I need to work on and where do I go for support with this?
• Some of the processes and dynamics of group work
• How to work with loss and grief

Please be aware that you will be expected to explore some personal history that you feel safe to share on this course.

Please Note: This course is not a replacement for personal therapy.

Please see "What do I need to join the course?" for instructions on how to apply.

How will I be taught?

This Level 2 course will involve full learner participation and self-reflection. There will be personal and sensitive discussions in small and large groups, group activities and role plays in pairs or triads (groups of three) followed by observer feedback.

You will keep a weekly personal learning journal which provides evidence of your learning. Your written and practical skills will be demonstrated, observed and formatively assessed during the course, by a variety of tutor, peer and self-evaluation. You will be given assignments and/ or a research project/ presentation. There is a short external assessment set by CPCAB taken towards the end of the course.

Please Note: A minimum of 85% attendance is required on this course as well as the timely completion of assignments. We would not expect students to be absent for more than 4 classes during the course or for more than two consecutive classes. A high level of commitment and up to 3-4 hours per week of self-directed learning outside of classes is essential.

What do I need to have with me?

A notebook and pen and/or a laptop.

For online courses, blended courses or classes which need to be moved online due to bad weather etc. you will need a computer/ laptop with a camera and access to Zoom.

You will be given a student handbook (text book) at the beginning of the course. The cost of the handbook is covered by the course fee. There is no need to buy any resources before the start of the course.

What do I need to join the course

Before enrolling on this level 2 course, you will need to complete an online application form available at this link - https://forms.office.com/r/5GDWBwXyB3

Following submission of your application you will need to complete the online literacy assessment using the link - https://forms.office.com/r/YUrHqyUurx

These forms check your suitability for the course and help identify any additional support you may require. If you are successful with your application and assessment you will be contacted and then you will need to book an interview slot by calling 03000 412222. The interview will typically take place via the telephone, but it may be a Zoom interview.

The interview involves an informal and honest discussion with a CounsellingTutor/ Curriculum Leader about your personal readiness and the content and level of the course. This ensures that you understand the personal, educational and financial commitments.

Places are often taken up quickly so early application is highly recommended. It is not necessary to have completed the Introduction to Counselling Skills Level 2 before enrolling on this course, but we do advise those with no previous listening/ helping experience and knowledge to do so.

It is recommended that you don't enrol on this course if you have undergone a life-changing experience during the last 12 months, for example, a bereavement, as there is an expectation for personal self-reflection on previous life experiences.

You will need to have access to a computer/ laptop with an Internet connection and you will need a degree of computer literacy. All coursework and assignments will need to be completed electronically and uploaded onto an online folder.
